I asked black saga members two questions. Why did you join and what is your favorite part about black saga? Let’s start with the coach Mr. Dungy. He said he joined “because I got a letter from a student 8 years ago asking me if we could have black saga and if I would sponsor it.” He said his favorite part is “meeting kids every year and watching them compete.” Now let’s hear from some of the members. Maya G. says she joined “because I have been doing it for 2 years and to learn more about African American history.” She says her favorite part is “the food.” Yassira I. says she joined “because it is fun.” She says her favorite part is also “the snacks.” Finally, Genevieve says she joined “so, I can learn more about African American history.” She says her favorite part is also “learning about African American history.” Every year students from the black saga club team up and go to competition with each other and other schools to see who will be named black saga champion.

Every year our school has a musical. This year the musical was Hairspray Jr. It was directed by our chorus teacher, Mr. Dickerson. He coordinated lights and technology. Ms. Honeyman oversaw the sets/props and theatre. Costumes were done by Sarah Bennett. Ms. Jakubowski oversaw acting. Ms. Eisenberg and Ms. Graham were the choreographers. We had some wonderful students come from the high school to help direct. Their names were Stella Rose, Aaron Partin, Alex Lewis, and Natalie Lanasa. Sofie Quirk stole the show as Tracy Turnblad. Mr. Dickerson told the cast this may have been the hardest play he has directed, but it also turned in to one of his best plays. Anna Butler says, “She had lots of fun getting to know the cast!” Ms. Graham says, “It was my first-time being part of a musical and I was very impressed with the student’s dedication and can’t wait till next year.” This musical will be hard to beat. Thanks to all the cast and crew for making such a great show.
